YKAN has been supporting improved natural resource planning and management in Indonesia for more than 25 years, including work with governments, private sectors, and local communities. Since 2017, Indonesia Terrestrial Program (ITP) of YKAN has been developing and implementing shared conservation agenda (SCA), with the grand strategy of Indonesia’s forest. This grand strategy is under global priority of climate change mitigation and adaptation. YKAN has set a 2030 SCA goals for Indonesia forest. To achive these goals, YKAN implements four interlinked strategies: (1) Climate change mitigation and adaptation policy framework (2) Sustainable forestry (3) Sustainable oil plam, and (4) Community-based forest conservation.

YOUR POSITION WITH TNC

The Sustainable Oil Palm Senior Manager leads, manages, and implements all aspects of YKAN’s oil palm program in Indonesia.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

The Sustainable Oil Palm Senior Manager leads, manages, and implements all aspects of YKAN’s oil palm program in Indonesia. This position is a member of Indonesia Terrestrial Program Senior Manager Team (SMT) and is accountable for oil palm related outcomes under the direction of the Terrestrial Program Director.

This position will work with various partners, including government institutions, business association and private sector, and other civil society organizations to transform the oil palm production and supply chains. This position serves as the principal contact to government agencies, other conservation organizations, foundations and academic community on issues related to oil palm.

RESPONSIBILITIES AND SCOPE

  • Geographic/programmatic size and scope is that of a large, complex business unit, multiple small to mid-sized business units, division/regional or a large program area spanning parts of multiple states/divisions.
  • May be responsible for leading or co-leading a whole system program.
  • Recruit, retain and manage high quality and effective multi-disciplinary staff with responsibility for performance management, training and career development.
  • Broad management and leadership responsibility for 10+ staff members, both internal and external to the organization.
  • Develops long-term strategies and achieves strategic goals and objectives
  • May work in variable weather conditions, at remote locations, on difficult and hazardous terrain, and under physically demanding circumstances.
  • Makes independent strategic decisions frequently based on analysis, ambiguous information, experience, and judgment.
  • May require frequent travel domestically and/or internationally and evening and weekend hours.
  • YKAN may, from time to time, assign the Employee to another location(s) in accordance with the requirements of the Employee’s job description and/or YKAN’s operational needs. The Employee agrees to work in such other work location(s) in Indonesia.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • BA/BS degree and 10 years’ experience in conservation practice or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Experience with certain aspects of fundraising: identifying donor prospects and donor cultivation (if required).
  • Experience directing a major program or project of strategic importance, including management/supervision of multi-disciplinary teams and meeting deadlines.
  • Experience working with current trends and practices in relevant discipline(s) and geographic regions.
  • Supervisory experience, including ability to motivate, lead, set objectives and manage performance.
  • Politically savvy and experienced in partnership development (partners, community, government); extensive networking skills with high level conservation contacts.
  • Negotiation skills.
  • Experience influencing, developing and implementing conservation policy and plans at the state or country level.
  • Experience with financial management of a large program.

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • BA/BS degree and 10-12 years’ experience in conservation practice, oil palm sector, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Knowledge of oil palm sector, partnership schemes in oil palm, RSPO, ISPO standards, HCV assessment and management.
  • Knowledge of climate change issues, especially REDD+ policy dialogue globally and in Indonesia.
  • Demonstrated experience influencing, developing and implementing conservation policy and plans at the national level
  • Developing practical applications of scientific concepts and technical innovations for conservation purposes.
  • Motivating team members, setting goals and leading efforts.
  • Delivering practical, adaptable products and services to customers.
  • Knowledge of politics and society with respect to environmental affairs.
  • Managing time and diverse activities under deadlines while delivering quality results.
  • Communicating clearly via written, spoken, and graphical means in English and other relevant languages.
  • Successful experience in developing, directing and managing multiple projects.
  • Demonstrated success as a manager who has successfully motivated staff to achieve and sustain excellence.
  • Demonstrated leadership and able to work effectively with and through others in a decentralized and geographically dispersed organization.
  • Successful experience in partnership development (partners, community, government, etc.) including extensive networking with high-level conservation contacts; political savvy.
  • Proven interpersonal, communication and negotiation skills.

ADDITIONAL JOB INFORMATION

This position requires a valid driver's license and compliance with the Conservancy's Auto Safety Program. Employees may not drive Conservancy-owned/leased vehicles, rental cars, or personal vehicles on behalf of the Conservancy if considered "high risk drivers."
