Job Description

Program Overview The Food and Land Use (FOLU) Coalition is a community of organizations and individuals committed to the urgent need to transform the way we produce and consume food and use our land for people, nature and climate. Established since 2017, the FOLU community currently consist of country platforms in 7 countries (Australia, China, Columbia, Ethiopia, Indonesia, UK) and the Nordic region (Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway and Sweden), a group of core partners, FOLU Ambassadors, funders, who connects with a shared mission to ensure food and land use system play their role in delivering the world’s SDG and Paris Agreement commitments.
In Indonesia, FOLU Indonesia is currently working on an analysis of food and land-use systems in order to develop policies that can provide food security and healthy diets, together in its effort to tackle climate and biodiversity crisis. Indonesia is challenged to supply enough food and achieve national food security. Hence, it is essential to identify and develop specific agricultural strategies to which extend future demand can be met given unexpected changes in the populations without risking further environment degradation. However, in the current national policy to increase in production in agriculture, has relied on effort to expand production land, inefficient input production subsidies which in the long-run will lead to environmental degradation challenges in Indonesia.
As part of delivering insight to increase agricultural production while also tackling climate challenges in Indonesia, an analysis is needed to better understand opportunities for agricultural intensification in Indonesia. Such study will provide systematic review of evidence on agriculture intensification that aligned with agroecology principle and applying the strategies to Indonesia’s agriculture planning.
Job Responsibilities The main areas of responsibility of research consultant will include the following:
  • Review reports and publications on agricultural intensification in Indonesia.
  • Undertake systematic analysis on agriculture intensification opportunities which align with agroecology principle including opportunities and challenges in its adoption to intensification strategies in Indonesia.
  • Develop approach and methodology for analysis for intended research.
  • Write working paper.
  • Coordinate with expert advisor in co-authoring and working on knowledge products and other communication documents.
  • Disseminate research progress and findings with primary partners and target audience, including development of slide deck on the research plan and result

During the contract period, the consultant will work under the FOLU Indonesia initiative led by WRI Indonesia.
Deliverables
  • Working paper on agricultural intensification analysis which aligned with agroecology principle for Indonesia (including preliminary, first and final draft).
  • Knowledge and communication products derived form expected research works.
  • The deliverables should be written in English

Job Qualifications
  • Legally able to work in Indonesia.
  • Minimum 5 years of research experience in environment, sustainability and climate change.
  • Hold a master’s degree in environmental science, agriculture, or related studies, with keen interest in public policy.
  • Strong research and analytical skill.
  • Excellent English and Bahasa Indonesia both verbal and written.
  • Excellent organizational and facilitation skills.
  • Candidate must be self-motivated, detail-oriented, and organized thinker with an ability to juggle multiple priorities, handle assignments independently, and work under tight deadlines.
  • High integrity and passion for sustainable development is preferred.
  • Advanced skills of Microsoft Office, Internet, and virtual meeting tools.

Period of Work
The duration of the service is 3.5 months (1 January – 15 April 2022). Detailed work plan will be discussed with WRI Indonesia team following signing of the engagement contract.

of Payment

Research Consultant will receive a compensation based on deliverables submitted throughout the project period. Please refer to the table below for the expected deliverables, deadlines, and payment plan. Deliverables

Must have authorization to work in Indonesia to be eligible for this position.

Final candidates might be required to take a writing test and to produce two writing samples when needed.

Consultant rate
: Consultant rate is commensurate with experience and skills.
